The terminal bronchiole (left) with ciliated columnar or cuboidal epithelium is a conducting passageway that does not exchange gases. The respiratory bronchiole (right) with occasional ciliated cuboidal epithelium interrupted by alveolar openings is the first site of gas exchange.
