The seminiferous epithelium to the right of the arrow is at stage XIV, to the left is stage XIII. On the left the primary spermatocytes (cell with largest nuclei) are at the diplotene stage. On the right the primary spermatocytes are in metaphase of the first meiotic division and will become secondary spermatocytes. Spermatogonia and early spermatocytes rest on the basal portion of the seminiferous epithelium while elongating spermatids are in the adluminal portion of seminiferous epithelium.
